...to look at the original classic fairy tale written in 1816 by E. T. A. Hoffmann: The Nutcracker and the Mouse King. Go a bit further and read the gentler adaptation of Hoffmann's story written in 1844 by Alexandre Dumas: The Nutcracker. It was Dumas' lighter version that was made into a ballet in Russia, with music by Tchaikovsky. Students have the spectacular opportunity to see Ballet Nebraska perform The Nutcracker this December at the Orpheum Theater in Omaha. We'll have sugar plums dancing in our head and before our eyes!

Time for a creepy read...
Given the late date, we’ve finally settled on Washington Irving’s classic spooky tale "The Legend of Sleepy Hollow" for our first book club read this month. Obviously, our discussion of this short story will include the requisite hot tea and nibbles (feel free to bring your favorite blend—Assam, Earl Grey, Darjeeling, English Breakfast, etc. I’m simply mad about Constant Comment these days…) We’ll end the evening with a viewing of Tim Burton’s fabulously Gothic adaptation Sleepy Hollow starring a quirky Johnny Depp.
Access the full text online here or download the pdf to your laptop.

"I have always thought of Christmas time, when it has come round...as a good time: a kind, forgiving, charitable, pleasant time: the only time I know of, in the long calendar of the year, when men and women seem by one consent to open their shut-up hearts freely, and to think of people below them as if they really were fellow-passengers to the grave, and not another race of creatures bound on other journeys." |

The Great Gatsby
party was the cat's meow and the bee's knees! The tea of choice was Raspberry Zinger--we went through several pots (though I'm still partial to black currant.) We even picked up a few passers by from the staff. Some sat down to chat about the novel and Prohibition's effect on organized crime. Some just wanted to score a muffin. (You know who you are!) Official party-goers kept coming from their busy after-school schedules. We snacked and chatted before settling in to watch the new film. When the lights came up as the credits rolled, we all agreed it was a wrenching ending!

Fall Book Fair Fun
Our Fall Scholastic Book Fair theme was "Reading Oasis" so we decided to go Egyptian! Cleopatra and Nefertiti stopped by with the mummy of King Tutankhamun to visit the kids and teach them to "Walk Like An Egyptian" at our Perks Assembly (music complements of The Bangles!) Clifford also made an appearance to the delight of young and old...er.

Pride & Prejudice Tea Party
What goes better with a classic than a cup of hot tea? We certainly couldn't think of anything, so the library hosted a tea party and book discussion after several students finished reading Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen. The first line of the novel opened our discussion: "It is a truth universally acknowledged, that a single man in possession of a good fortune must be in want of a wife."
